Electricity Usage Shifting Suggestions

  1. Reducing your overall consumption through more efficient equipment, such as compact fluorescent lamps, will reduce your overall cost of electricity.

  2. The TOU pricing gives you the flexibility to save money by conserving electricity or shifting your electricity consumption from the on-peak period to the mid-peak or off-peak periods, when prices are lower.

  3. If you have a programmable thermostat, consider setting its timer to reflect the TOU price periods. If you donít have a programmable thermostat, it maybe worthwhile to purchase one to help you control your heating system or air-conditioner so it doesnít run as often during the on-peak period when TOU prices are highest.

  4. Depending on how well your home is insulated, it maybe possible to pre-heat or pre-cool your home by a few degrees prior to on-peak periods so that it remains comfortable during the on-peak period when TOU prices are higher.

  5. Try to use your washing machine and clothes-dryer as little as possible during on-peak periods. Instead, try to use them during off-peak hours as often as possible, to save money when electricity prices are lower.

  6. Consider running your dishwasher during off-peak hours. Some newer dishwasher models come equipped with a timer; have yours run off-peak, if possible.

  7. If you have an electric water heater, consider purchasing a programmable timer for it. Youíll save the most by programming your water heater to operate off-peak periods when TOU prices are lowest.

  8. Try to operate electrical swimming pool, sauna or spa equipment such as water pumps, filters and heaters during off-peak periods when TOU prices are lowest.

  9. Turn off both household and outdoor lights during the day, where possible.
